History

Carmel College, a residential college for women affiliated under the University of Calicut, is the first affiliated college in Mala. It was established in the year 1981 in the heart of Mala, a beautiful small town rich with cultural diversities situated towards the southern tip of the Cultural Capital of Kerala, Thrissur. The institution was started and run by the Sisters of the Congregation of the Mother of Carmel (CMC Udaya Province Irinjalakuda) and the propelling force behind them was the farsighted vision of Blessed ChavaraKuriakose Elias, the founder of the CMC, who firmly believed that if any society is to be uplifted, it is essential that the women folk and the girl child ought to be educated.

Carmel College was informally inaugurated and the classes started functioning from 3 rd August 1981 with Sr. Aurea CMC as its First Manager and Founder Principal. With our hardwork and determination we were able to become a 1 st grade college by 1984 with the commencement of the two degree courses, BSc Mathematics and B.A Sociology. And in the year 2001, we entered in to the new millennium with a golden feather added to our achievement crown by becoming a PG College with the start of M.A History Programme. Currently, we are offering 13 UG Courses and 8 PG Courses, and hosting one research centre. Additionally, 6 courses are offered under B.Voc Programme and 2 courses under Community College which aim for skill development and overall development of students.

With our Motto ‘Light and Love, we aim to empower the women by providing them with good quality education to access knowledge and to help them to shape themselves to better citizens and best human beings. Our sincerity and academic excellence was well paid off when our college got Accredited with ‘B+ +’ Grade by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) in the year 2004. In the second cycle2010, Carmel College was crowned for her academic excellence by Re-accrediting her with ‘A’ Grade (‘3.03’ CGPA) by NAAC. And we were able to withhold the ‘A’ Grade in the third cycle (2016) of NAAC too, but with much higher CGPA of ‘3.22’.

We always ensure quality education and safety for our students and so, from the very start onwards, we provide hostel accommodation to the students and this facility was very helpful to the students who come from long distant places. In 1985, the new double storied hostel building with all necessary facilities was inaugurated. Another hostel building was inaugurated in 2015 and this new hostel was built by receiving the funding from UGC.

We aim for better citizens and our college is the best example in cultivating social commitments and civic duties in the students and as a part of this, various clubs, forums and cells is formed. Career Guidance Cell, Nature Club, Women’s Cell, Bhoomithra Club, Techie club, CLIS Club are few among them to name. Walk With Scholar Programme and Student Support Programme, the two initiatives to motivate and support students with their academics, are in full swing by helping the students to develop a passion for academics.
