Walk with a scholar Programme

Walk with a scholar (WWS)

Walk with a scholar program at Carmel College , Mala started in the year 2014-15 with guidance and financial support from the Govt. of Kerala. This is a specialized mentoring program designed exclusively for the Under Graduate students. The purpose of the program is to provide an extra bit of motivation, orientation, guidance and exposure to academically brilliant and passionate students, which will be useful for their higher studies and future employment. The mentoring scheme of WWS is founded on the concept of mentor as guide and friend.

Appropriate students are selected in the 1st year and the number of students from a given batch is limited to 30. The selected students continue in the program for the entire 3 year duration of their Under Graduate course. The mentoring scheme is purely voluntary in nature and two categories of mentors are identified: internal mentor and external mentor. Internal mentors are selected from the faculty of Carmel College and external mentors are identified from outside the college, who excel in various disciplines and professions, as found suitable according to the local needs of the students. Each student goes through 10 sessions (1 hour each) of internal mentoring and 25 sessions of external mentoring during an academic year. They will also undergo several mock tests, interviews, debates, power point presentations etc. aimed at their core and soft skill development. Additionally, motivational visits to reputed research institutes, universities, public service institutions and corporate are arranged in order to give students a much needed exposure to professional life.

The students have to be made aware of the Programme and applications invited from them and selection done by the college. The candidates selected under the Programme must be from the first year of the Under Graduate Programme. Students who are having less than 60% aggregate marks in the qualifying examination and who need some additional support in identified subjects alone are to be included in the Programme. If it is not possible to identify such students, students having the lowest percentage of marks in the qualifying examination from among the applicants may be selected.

Classes are to be engaged by the faculty of the College itself. The Programme should have a college level coordinator. The College Council should function as a Monitoring Committee for the Programme and should meet once in two months at least to evaluate the Progress of the Programme.
