The Department started functioning in 1981 with the inception of Carmel College under the University of Calicut. In the initial years, classes were handled for the pre-degree students. In 1984 the teachers began taking classes for the B.A .Sociology which offered political science as a subsidiary paper. Since the year 2002, the Department started handling the optional papers for B.A.History students also. The college started B.A. Political Science as a recognized unaided course during the year 2002-2003 under University of Calicut. Today, the Department stands strong with a good number of students from various districts of Kerala and even outside the state.The Department is proud to have produced good results over the years besides sports achievements of the students.Certificate course,Skill oriented sessions,Curricular,Co-curricular and Extracurricular activities,Seminars,Webinars,Study tours and Extension activities have kept the department always live and happening.

Since its inception in November 2002, as of now, the Department of Political Science has 131 life members. The Department has always maintained cordial relations with its alumnae members. As and when possible, the members try to keep in touch with the Department and contribute and co-operate in all possible ways. The life members always try to attend the Annual alumnae meet conducted in the college. The Department is happy about the fact that a good number of alumnae members have opted for higher studies after completing their degree programme in Carmel College. The support and love of the alumnae members was very evident during the NAAC Accreditation process and all programmes organised both in and outside the campus and the Department is very hopeful that this will continue uninterrupted.
